How can a nest contain a fully feathered nestling and brand new hatchlings.

A pair of red finches made a nest in a wreath on my porch. The wreath fell and the 5 new babies were all dead by the time I discovered what happened. There was however a fully feathered fledgling that survived and left the nest 6 days later. How is it possible that this one baby bird was so much older than it's nestlings?

Possibly, the larger nestling was a Brown-headed cowbird. My best guess.
