What is the science behind the many geographic variations of the Dark-eyed Junco

Trying to grasp a better understanding on what exactly caused the Dark-eyed Junco to evolve to possess multiple geographic variations at a biological standpoint. I don't believe it can be described by allopatric speciation-- typically there would have to be something prevalent enough to isolate them geographically, and evidently, some of the Junco variations have overlapping ranges. Is it a result of their surrounding environment?

I don't know if these kinds of questions are posted here frequently, but I couldn't think of a better site to post on.
