Nesting Merlins transferring food

I have been watching nesting Merlins since mid-May. I would like to know how captured food is transfered from the adult male to the adult female Merlin. Today I took a picture of the pair and it looks as if the female lands just below the male and he releases food from his talons and the female catches it in her beak. Is that the way it happens? Or, perhaps I missed the actual transfer.

Thank you for your reply. I watched and photographed the Merlins for almost three months. They were fascinating. A great experience for me.
