What is an "Allies"?

I see this after different grouping of birds on the printable checklists. At first I thought it was alleles, as in genetics, but I'm not sure. Would someone shed some light on this term for me?

My best guess is that allies would be used as 'similar birds,' so they're allied (Like the US, UK, Canada, and a bunch of others were during WWII).

Allies are species in the same family or genus, and they are generally similar in structure and behavior.
