Is it a House finch or a Purple finch?

I am nearly certain that I have never seen a Purple finch. I have photographed and studied through a spotting scope what are either Purple or House finches. I cannot be sure which species I have seen because I have never seen individuals who I can say with certainty are differently colored and marked. I have run the photos through the Merlin photo ID App but it comes up with both species. I am looking for additional guidance and resources to distnguish the two.

I think of the Purple Finch as having a "raspberry"-hued, watercolor wash going down it's entire body, including the wings. Richer hues at the head. The House Finch, however, will appear more reddish and there will be a definite lack of color on the wings. The female PUFI will have a telltale, white mark near the eye, which is absent on the female HOFI.
