how to hold a successful bird count event with kids

I am hosting a backyard bird count "practice run" with little kids at my library, and I would like to offer them a checklist or data sheet to fill out both the day of our event and some info to take home to participate during the actual official birdcount days. Any tips? Thanks!

I just went to the Great Backyard Bird Count home page, then selected Get Started from the green task bar near the top of the page, then scrolled down to the fine print at Tools to Get Started and selected Bird Lists.

Then in the box below Bird Lists I chose Bird list tool for the US and Canada. Then I selected a state, park, region and up popped a list that seems appropriate for that location during the GBBC event (not every bird seen there throughout the year. Not quite what I want, but a starter list that I can mix and match in a spreadsheet.

Probably other paths to follow too. Maybe a list with fewer names for little kids?

Try Sci Starter web pages?

Good birding,
