Same date and county, but different default species lists
May 1 checklists for Erie County, PA
On May 1st I was on a field trip to Presque Isle State Park, Erie County, PA. When I eBirded the trip the next day, weird things were happening, which can be reproduced. The default hot spot bird lists differed by location even though they were all in the same county on the same day. In MD, all hot spots within a county have the same species lists; is this not the case for all states?
I initially noticed that Carolina Chickadee and Fish Crow were on some of the lists, which seemed really odd. But they weren't there for other spots. Northern Mockingbird and Great Egret were two others I noticed.
Anyway, I don't know if there's a glitch or what is going on. I get into eBird proper to enter my lists under Submit Observations.
Below are two Erie County, PA, hot spots with different bird lists for May 1.
Presque Isle SP--Vista 1: default list included FICR, CACH, and NOMO. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13971637
Presque Isle SP--West Pier: default list included none of those species. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13971647

This took a bit of research to identify the problem, but we really appreciate you letting us know about this. The basic issue is that this area was covered by a BCR (bird Conservation Region) polygon which had slightly inaccurate boundaries. The result was that the points that feel outside the polygon defaulted to the Pennsylvania state list, which included those crazy things like Carolina Chickadee.
Thanks to your email we were able to fix this and improve the data quality for Erie Co., PA, significantly.
