Reviewers have tagged some eBird checklists as having Protocol issues; these checklists show this message at the top:
Protocol issue. This checklist has been flagged because of an issue with the selected Protocol. This checklist and its observations do not appear in public eBird outputs. More information.
Selection of the correct eBird Observation Type is important. The most common Protocol issues are when an eBirder conducts a Nocturnal Flight Call count but does not use the Nocturnal Flight Call Count Protocol or includes banded birds in an eBird checklist but does not use the Banding Protocol. Less common is when an eBirder conducts a Traveling count in pelagic waters that would be more appropriate for the eBird Pelagic Protocol. In all these cases, using the correct Observation Type, and following its recommendations on using the effort fields, is very important.
Less common situations could include issues with use of our core Observation Types: Stationary, Traveling, Historical, Incidental, or Area.
Checklists that do not appear in public eBird output are also not used for science. To learn more please see our Public and Non-public Checklists for more information on how checklists are displayed.
