Clarification of recording distance needed.

From the eBird web page:
(below, between the quotes, are portions of three paragraphs)
"Recording distance
... If you cover the same section of trail out-and-back we encourage you to submit a checklist for the trip in, and another for the trip out.

If you submit a single checklist for an out-and-back birding event, only report the one-way distance.

One additional point: we want to collect the complete, accurate track of where you went birding. Please do not stop the track half way through in order to get the one-way distance. It is much better to let the track continue to run to record the full distance (including the doubling back) and then to cut your distance in half."

Question is...
Is this contradictory? They want one checklist for the way in, and another for the way out. But then they say don't stop the tracking half way through. (I assume 'half way through' means at the turnaround point). Can we keep tracking turned on when switching to a second checklist?

** Finally...do we need to keep our phones turned on the entire time we are in the field, working on one checklist, in order to get a track? Mine shuts off after a minute or so of non-use.
Thank you.

What they're saying it even though they'd prefer if people made two checklists, they realize that it's rather cumbersome and that most people don't want to do that, so if you don't make two checklists and only make one, keep the track going over the entire thing and later cut the distance down to what you actually covered.

The track keeps going when the phone falls asleep.
