What is a "Yard" or a "Patch"?

eBird has tools that allow you to keep track of your yard and patch lists, and compare them with your friends and other eBirders. For decades, birders have kept life and year lists for their yards and favorite birding locales. Sharing these lists with your friends, and seeing what they have recently observed can be great fun, and you can easily do this using the new tool. Many of us have a favorite patch where we keep track of birds, and many of us count them daily and enter the data into eBird. Now you can create a patch in eBird from a combination of your locations, and share your results with the world. Importantly, we hope this friendly competition will result in more complete checklists from these small locations, better enabling our research in the long run. Our "Yard Totals" and "Patch Totals" allow you to keep better track of the bird lists you care about. At the same time, you can see how your patch or yard compares with those of other eBirders in your home county, or around the world. In order to participate, you will need to sign up and define your yard or patches. To find out more, visit our page on Yard and Patch Listing Guidelines
